During the last few months Sassari was playing probably the best basketball in Europe. They were in a hot streak, really hot to be precise with 20 wins in a row. They managed to win FIBA Europe Cup against Wurzburg and than knocked out Milano from the PO. I do not underestimate their good work but to be realistic, there were some red flags.
First of all, they managed to win against Wurzburg who is not top tear team even in Germany, they are mediocre and without a true star. Second, yes, they have beaten Milano, but Milano was first two games without James who is the best player on the team, they were with Nedovic who lacked game practice as he was injured for a long time and they were without Gaudaitis, probably the best low post player in Europe in this moment.

So, their spectacular run is not that Spectacular if you see it like that. For sure, at home court, they are incredibly hard to beat as they play in a small, packed venue on Sardegna, but away from home they are beatable “as fuck”.

They are a good team lead by Pocheco, he is a mad man and a real student of the game with a potential to be one of the best coaches in Europe, but what they lack is a top tier defense. And of course, a real leader. Pierre, Smith and Thomas are damn good players, but not leaders and they do not have experience in matches so important.

I this situation, I will always play on experience. Gaspar Vidmar and Michael Bramos are not the ebst players on the court but they know what it takes to win a championship. Vidmar was a Europen champion with Slovenia 2 years ago as a the team’s best defender and he played a lot of these games when he was in Turkey. Bramos is a knock down shooter who found his place in Venezia, but before that he was a clutch machine for Panathianikos team which won 2 Euroleagues under coach Obradovic.

This will for sure be a low scoring event. Venezia will slow down the game as much as possible, they know how to do it and that is their gameplay. Sassari tends to lose focus when the game is not in their flow, and Venezia at home can surely do that.

In my opinion, Venezia takes this game in a hard fought match up.
